The History of Lotto in Italy

However, they did raise funds for a wide variety of public purposes. These included libraries, roads, and canals. The first big lottery on Austrian soil was drawn in 1751 during the reign of Empress Maria Theresia. The English State Lottery was a long-running affair that ran from 1694 until 1826. A national wheel was drawn in Rome in 2005. The prize was a pari-mutuel, or a jackpot that is divided among all winners. The best thing about the lottery was that it was painless to use.

During the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, the Dutch and Flemish towns of the Low Countries regularly held public lotteries. These were used to raise money for poor people and for fortifications. Some of the prizes were in the form of fancy dinnerware, but others were in the form of cash.
